Basic Marketing Principles for Your Website

Know Your Market

It's important for a small business to find its niche in the market. Finding your niche helps you identify your customers and better understand their needs. Without finding your niche you won’t be able to compete with the larger companies. Build your website based on your overall marketing strategy-know the direction of your business, who you are trying to target, and how you are going to target those customers.

Have a Purpose

Your website should fit in with your overall marketing strategy. Your website should have a purpose and not just be an advertisement. It should be interesting and useful; customers should have a reason to look around the site and take some type of action. For example, visitors should be able to buy your product online or be able to register for your event mailing list.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is making sure your website performs well in search engines. One of the ways to SEO your website is to research which are the most frequently used keywords in your particular niche. Find the most popular keywords that have the least competition, and then use those words in your site. You can also increase the number of internal links on your pages to increase your ranking in search engines.

Easy To Use

Your website must be user-friendly. Make sure it is well structured, with the links and titles clearly marked, and that it is easy to navigate around.

Update Your Content

Add content to your site regularly. This will help keep existing visitors engaged and attract new visitors. Write up a schedule of when you will update each page or section. Calendar your updates, time gets away when you're running a small business. Update images to keep a fresh look.

Sell Information

You can attract people to your site by offering free information. If you can provide visitors with a lot of useful and interesting information you are giving them something for free. You can then give them information on your products/services, and it will be easier to sell to them if they are already engaged.

Be Credible

Your website needs to be credible. If potential consumers trust your site they are much more likely to buy your product or to attend your event. Increase the credibility of your content by offering exchange and return policies on your products, or by joining industry bodies and organizations.

Engage Users

Keep in contact with your potential and existing customers. Ask them to sign up for event mailing lists and regular newsletters, and create online forums and discussion groups. Once you have their details you can continue to engage with them for future marketing campaigns.
