Design Element: Type (page 3)

Changing the shape of the lines and letters, their placement, and their density makes significant changes to the interpretation of this next graphic. The design suggests a shape in its use of softer, natural lines. The line mutes with the use of the dash. The words are disjointed, unbalanced. A small menu can work at the top of the site; its placement is important and may include two simple, light columns, just above the arches, rather than across the top of the site.

Here, lines create a background. A few colored icons, placed at a diagonal, can draw users to their purpose as navigation links and appear to sit on top of the lines to create depth. The text is actually vertical lines which don't comfort or totally disarm users. Their collected shape, as the word NO, can intrigue the user. If you use words in this manner, be sure to select the critical keyword to your point.

This next example uses words to create one simple statement, "this is a poetry site." Buttons placed randomly suggest offbeat poetry. Buttons either placed differently, in a linear order, or possibly as a group in the lower right-hand corner, suggest different kinds of poetry. Simple use of lines and type can support the development of sites. More graphics, color, and photos, aren't always needed, especially if your focus in on content. The layout can always be revisited and updated. This site works with simple design and great poems. High maintenance design with no time to for the author to write new poems results in frustrated users.

Fast, fun, low maintenance, plenty of room for content and color. Designing sites doesn't always have to be a huge task. Clean style, simple navigation, and interesting content works. Placing the word SKIING at different angles can convey different kinds of skiing. If the competition shows mountain photos, a different look can transition to a layout that grabs attention. Scenic photos can be included; they don't serve solely as layout.

Incorporate type into design and navigation elements to guide users through the story, purpose, and intent of your client.
